LĀNAʻi CITY, Hawaiʻi — June 16, 2026 — Ohana Healthcare Partners Foundation Inc. (OHPF), a newly formed 501(c)(3) nonprofit rooted in the community of Lānaʻi, today announced the opening of its inaugural giving campaign alongside its first sponsored community event — a volleyball clinic on Lānaʻi. Founded by Lānaʻi-born clinical psychologist Eleanor Castillo Sumi, Ph.D., the Foundation is built to serve current island residents, diaspora, and the descendants of those who grew up on Lānaʻi — wherever they now live — by removing the financial and geographic barriers that stand between them and education, healthcare, and opportunity.

“Growing up on Lānaʻi didn’t just shape what I believe — it shaped how I see everything,” said Dr. Castillo Sumi. “The island gave me a lens: what it means to build a life with intention, to take care of the people around you, to carry your community with you no matter how far you go. Every organization I built, every family I served, every system I worked to change was quietly answering a question I’d been asking since I was a young girl on that island. This Foundation is that answer — brought home.”

A Foundation Born from Lived Experience

Dr. Castillo Sumi was born on Lānaʻi and left at age 17 to attend Cal State University Northridge, where she graduated cum laude with her psychology degree. She went on to earn her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at an American Psychological Association-approved program, Pacific Graduate School of Psychology (now Palo Alto University), and over more than 25 years built a career in behavioral health systems transformation, health equity, and digital health strategy — working across California, Hawaiʻi, and nationally.

In April 2023, she founded Ohana Healthcare Partners, a behavioral health technology consulting firm — building the platform, resources, and organizational infrastructure that made the Foundation possible. When her father, Prudencio Castillo, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, Lānaʻi could not provide the care her family needed. He died with dignity — but not on the island he had called home for decades. That experience moved what had long been a professional conviction into something deeply personal and irreversible. In January 2026, Dr. Castillo Sumi incorporated Ohana Healthcare Partners Foundation Inc. in Hawaiʻi and received federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in February 2026.

Five Areas of Support

OHPF’s grant and scholarship programs are organized around five areas of interest: education (including postsecondary degrees and health-related vocational training), health and wellbeing, emergency care support, technology access, and board-directed mission-aligned giving. Funding is available to current Lānaʻi residents and to diaspora — including the children and descendants of those born or raised on the island — wherever they live. Several funding areas operate on a rolling basis, designed to respond in real time to the moments when support is needed most.

A Community-Rooted Board

The Foundation’s founding board brings together leaders with deep roots in the Lānaʻi community. Board members include Lanai Tabura, a graduate of Lānaʻi High and Elementary School (Class of 1987), and Henry Costales, also an LHES graduate (Class of 1988). A $1.5 Million Inaugural Campaign

OHPF has set a $1.5 million inaugural campaign goal to establish the Foundation’s first grant and scholarship programs and fund early operational infrastructure. The Foundation’s giving program offers two paths to Founding recognition. Donors who pledge at the Founding Circle level — $25,000 for individuals and families, $100,000 for corporate and institutional partners — and complete that pledge within one year earn immediate Founding recognition. Donors giving at the Founding Partner level ($10,000/yr) or Founding Corporate Partner level ($30,000/yr) earn their permanent Founding designation by sustaining giving for five consecutive years beginning in this campaign. Founding status at all levels closes permanently when the inaugural campaign ends.

“Lānaʻi is a community of approximately 3,400 people,” said Dr. Castillo Sumi. “There are no stoplights. No hospital capable of delivering babies or providing serious medical care. And yet it produces people of extraordinary resilience, ambition, and love for one another. This Foundation exists because those people deserve more than resilience. They deserve a net.”
